Youth Activities at Kids Can Achieve

A weekly group for young people with additional needs to interact with their peers, help their social skills and social interaction and make and build friendships.

We offer a range of fun activities including cooking, crafts, team games and sports. We also occasionally take the young people on outings to local places of interest, such as the cinema or bowling.

When: Every Wednesday during term time, between 7pm and 9.30pm.
How much: £2.50 per session (please note there may be an additional charge for some outings, to be advised in advance)

Further details on our plans for this half term are available here.

Our Youth Holiday Scheme includes a combination of centre-based days and outings. Previously we have visited Whipsnade Zoo, Quasar, London Dungeons and the theatre.

In addition to this we also organise two, two to three day residential trips a year. Past trips have been to Alton Towers resort, Hillingdon Outside Activity Centre and Avon Tyrrell.

When: Weekdays during school holidays. Centre based days run from 10am to 3pm, but timing for outings will vary and may take place during evenings (for example cinema and meal out).
How much: Cost will vary depending on the nature of the activity but
will typically be around £10 for a centre-based day, £20 for a trip out and £60 to £80 for a residential trip.

Information and booking forms for Easter will be available soon.

We are always interested in hearing from young people regarding activities they would like to see at Youth Group or on Youth Holiday Scheme. If you have accessed or are interested in accessing one of these services, and would like to make a suggestion, please complete a suggestion form and return it to helen@kidscanachieve.co.uk or by post to Helen Kingham, Kids Can Achieve, Cedars Hall, Chicheley Road, Harrow Weald, HA3 6QH.

Past activities: May and Summer Holiday Schemes 2009

During May half term Youth Group members packed their bags and headed to Alton Towers for three days!

There were 18 young people who stayed in the Splash Landings Hotel for two nights. The group enjoyed two sessions in the Splash Landings Water Complex and two days in the park. The weather was brilliant, the young people conducted themselves well and the staff were on the ball.

This was the third trip of this kind and by far the most successful.

A special thanks and congratulations go to those young people who are now able to help take responsibility for our younger members and who were a great help at the park, at meal times and in their rooms. Watch out for our Youth Volunteering Programme which is being launched during the Autumn Term.

The Summer Holiday Scheme was extra special this year thanks to some additional funding from the Four Acre Trust. With the Under 12s scheme, Youth Group relocated to the John Lyon School for five weeks, where they had use of several classrooms, the play ground and the swimming pool.

Activities included theatre workshops, swimming, arts and crafts and lots of trips out!

Having the two schemes on the same site was of particular benefit this Summer, as we have a number of young people who will soon be moving up from Under 12s to the Youth Scheme. This co-location, with familiar staff and children on site, helps smooth this transition and make it a much more positive experience for the children.

Jack Petchey Achievement Awards

What is a Jack Petchey Award?

The Jack Petchey Achievement Award Scheme aims to
help schools, colleges and youth organisations acknowledge
the achievements of the young people they work with.

Three times a year, the young people at Kids Can Crew nominate
a young person who they feel deserves the award. It doesn't need
to be for an academic achievement - but about making an effort
and trying your best.

Each award winner then receives £200, which they can spend on something of benefit to the group. Past awards have been used for workshops in magic tricks and karate, trips out and a games console.

CONGRATULATIONS to all our Jack Petchey Award Winners! Keep up the good work!
