Kids Can Achieve was formed in October 2002 by local parents, concerned professionals and members of the community in Harrow.

It was formed to support local children and young people whose educational, emotional and social and psychological difficulties were not being recognised. As a result of this gap in provision these children were developing complex behaviours and lacked the social and coping skills which enable them to learn, play and socialise and have normal life opportunities.

It became apparent that children from within the range of diagnoses which include ADHD, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Aspergers, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Schizophrenia and general communication disorders were particularly affected by this absence of understanding and suitable provision.

We acquired premises - a shop front in Pinner, Middx, funds were raised to equip and refurbish, formed a management committee, appointed a Director, started fund raising, developed partnerships with local agencies and started providing services for children aged 2-19 whose needs fell within our target groups.

The organisation has been fortunate in attracting a core of staff and volunteers with excellent skills, experience both professional and personal and high levels of commitment. This has included the appointment of the organisation's first Director, a parent with both extensive life skills in bringing up children with special needs and professional training.

Since these beginnings, the organisation has grown rapidly and has quickly become influential and respected amongst both statutory and voluntary agencies and most importantly the families they serve.

Demand for our services has increased as our profile has risen and despite our successes, we are conscious of an urgent need to expand and develop these services further.

What is the Haven Project?

Funded by the Harrow Primary Care Trust, the project provides services for families coping with the challenges of raising children with special needs. The organisations involved already work with children and young people facing a range of educational, emotional and behaviour difficulties and their families. The Haven project aims to complement existing activities by extending and developing support and services for carers.

 Who runs it?

Four local charities: Kids Can Achieve , The ADHD Support Group, The National Autistic Society Harrow and Harrow Offering Parents Education share office space at 29 and 35 Pinner Green. Although separately managed and funded, we work together to help our service users and provide them with a package of services and support to suit their individual needs.

Kids Can Achieve supports children with special needs and their carers. We aim to meet each child’s individual needs, support their carers, work in partnership with other agencies with which they are involved and create a caring and comfortable environment in which they can thrive. All our activities are geared towards helping our children achieve their full potential and integrating them into mainstream activities wherever possible.

We run an Ofsted registered term-time setting for children currently unable to attend school, After School Clubs, Youth Group, Art Psychotherapy, Holiday Schemes and outings, football and swimming. In addition we provide Complementary Therapies and 1:1 support and training for children and carers as well as 1:1 outreach support in family homes and mainstream settings eg schools and other holiday schemes.
